Privacy Policy

Summary

Plain Markdown is a free browser extension that converts pages locally with no data collection. AI prompts run on an AI provider key you supply. Our website counts visits without cookies. The data flows are described below.

Browser extension

Page conversion runs locally in your browser using our extraction engine. Drafts and settings are stored only in your browser, never on our servers. The extension performs no analytics and sets no cookies.

If you enable multi-tab capture, the extension reads your open tabs' titles and URLs so you can choose which to convert; that list stays in your browser, and the selected pages are converted locally like any single page.

When you use an AI prompt, the page content you choose is sent directly from your browser to the AI provider whose API key you supplied, such as OpenRouter or OpenAI. It is not routed through our servers and we never see it. That provider's privacy policy applies to the processing. The model picker downloads public model lists from OpenRouter and GitHub without sending any page content or key.

Destinations

When you connect an external service as a destination and use "Send to," the captured Markdown is sent directly from your browser to that service. The content does not pass through our servers. Any tokens or OAuth credentials you authorize are stored only in your browser.

Some destinations use OAuth. In those cases the one-time authorization code is exchanged on our server so that our integration credentials never ship inside the extension. The access token that comes back passes through that server once, on its way to your browser, and is never stored or logged. We do not access your account beyond what you explicitly grant during the consent step.

Website

This website counts visits with Vercel Web Analytics, which uses no cookies. Each page view records the time, the page address, the page you came from, your browser, operating system and device type, and your approximate location down to the city. Visitors are told apart by a hash of the incoming request. The hash resets daily, so visits cannot be linked across days or other sites.

Past purchases and trials

Until version 3.0, Plain Markdown sold a Premium license through Stripe and offered a free trial. We still hold the records from that time: for each purchase, the email address, the Stripe customer and payment identifiers, and the license key, never in plain text; for each activated key, a random device identifier with first and last seen dates; and for each trial, the email address and start date. We never stored card details.

From when AI prompts ran through our servers, we also hold one record per random install identifier or license, with monthly and daily AI request counts and first and last seen dates.

Third parties

We use a small set of trusted vendors to run the service:

• Vercel: hosts the website, counts its visits and runs the Notion sign-in step, so it handles standard request data such as IP addresses
• Neon: stores the records listed under Past purchases and trials
• Stripe: processed past Premium purchases
• Your AI provider: receives page content directly from your browser when you run an AI prompt, under the key and account you supply

Destinations you choose to connect (such as note-taking or read-later services) receive content directly from your browser and operate under their own privacy policies.

Data retention

We keep billing records for as long as tax and accounting rules require. You can ask us to delete the rest at any time; see Your choices.
