Summary

Plain Markdown offers a free browser extension (local processing, no data collection) and optional paid services (Pro features, API access) that involve the data collection described below.

Browser extension (free)

No data is collected. Pages are converted to Markdown locally in your browser.

  • Drafts are stored in browser extension storage and never leave your device
  • No analytics, no cookies, no server communication

Browser extension (Pro)

AI commands send page content to our server, which forwards it to Anthropic (Claude Haiku 4.5) for processing. Content is not stored after processing completes. Your license key is validated against our server on each request.

User accounts

Email address and hashed password are stored via Better Auth. Session cookies are used for authentication. Email verification is required before accessing account features.

Payments

Stripe handles all payment processing. We store your Stripe customer ID and subscription ID to manage your account. We do not store credit card numbers. See Stripe's privacy policy.

License keys

A SHA-256 hash of your license key is stored. The plaintext key is emailed to you once and never stored on our servers.

API usage

Request metadata (URL, status code, response time, content length, timestamp) is logged for billing and rate limiting. Page content is not stored after conversion completes.

Permissions

  • activeTab: access the current page only when you click the extension
  • scripting: inject content script on demand to extract content and open the floating editor
  • storage: persist local drafts

Third parties

  • Stripe — payment processing
  • Postmark — email delivery (verification, license keys, password reset)
  • Anthropic — AI processing for Pro features (Claude Haiku 4.5)

No analytics services are used.

Data retention

Usage logs are retained for billing and debugging. Account data is deleted upon request. Contact support@plainmarkdown.com to delete your account and all associated data.

Changes

If this policy changes materially, we will notify affected users by email. The date above reflects the most recent update.
